The Return of the King.

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord:
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
He hath loosed the fateful lightning of his terrible swift sword:
His truth is marching on.

I am bloody well exhausted, simply from watching this movie. (So glad I decided not to do Trilogy Tuesday.) Wow. It was good.

Like FotR and TTT before, the first viewing of RotK was full of ups and downs and ohmygods and whatthehell?!?!s. It usually takes me two or three viewings to reconcile myself to all the differences from the books.

Herewith, some scattered first impressions:

* Since I first read the books, I've always thought Sam was the hero of the piece. And the movie gets that.

* Merry and Pippin are the Slashiest. Things. Ever. EVER.

* Quite a lot of stuff in the trailer and in pics I have that didn't make it into the final cut. Hmm.

* I teared up in a few places, but what made me weep was Pippin's song and the accompanying action. Which I won't describe. Please tell me that's on the soundtrack.

* The battle scenes were great, but I didn't think they came close to Helm's Deep. Maybe in terms of scale, but not in terms of emotional involvement.

* Eowyn. "I am no man."

* You're going to hate me for this, but at one point in the score, I swear I heard the haunting Torgo theme.

* Merry and Pippin live only for each other.

* There's a lot of missed detail in this installment. There was so much they had to get through, I guess it was inevitable. I can only imagine how long the extended cut will be.

* Grond! Grond! Grond!

* I liked Denethor a lot more than I thought I was going to.

* The boy has been living the whole year in a state of denial, hoping against hope that the movie would end with Aragorn and Eowyn together. "It could happen," he kept saying. As soon as we got home, he deleted his Aragorn/Eowyn shippy desktop background. I believe Eowyn is gracing it alone now.

* Frodo and Sam are in love but not nearly so in love as Merry and Pippin.

* Gollum is the creepiest thing ever. I can never remember that he's CGI.

* You remember that guy from Helm's Deep who stood against the wall grinning as all the elves marched in? I saw him at Pelennor. And I'm pretty sure he was at the Black Gate as well. So I dub him the Wedge Antilles of Middle Earth. Though I don't know if he survived the Black Gate.

* It ends just as it should.

I probably won't get back to see this again until Saturday. I reckon I'll have a much more even impression by then.

There will be hobbit slash.

It really was a hobbit movie. SO much Merry and Pippin. I am content. :)

Yeah!!! That's so true!!!
Pippin was really much more intersting in that movie...
Especially when he has to leave Merry, and when he called for him because he's not sure to see him again, and on the field, at the end, when he finds Merry!!!
And I won't say a word about Frodo and Sam... Sam is so great!!! I want a Sam at home!!! Well, I would like a Frodo too...
I nearly cry during the all movie!!!
Bisous!!!
